Jean Elsen sale 152, lot 1741

This specimen was lot 1741 in Jean Elsen sale 152 (Brussels, September 2022), where it sold for €145 (about US$175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUBA, République (1902-), AR 50 pesos (5 oz), 1996. Vaca Anil. 950 p. frappées. Flan poli. (republic of Cuba, silver fifty pesos (five troy oz) of 1996, Vaca añil fish. 950 pieces struck. Proof.)"

After the release of many self-congratulatory NCLT's was greeted by disinterest from the world at large, the regime switched to less political topics such as sports and history. This was part of an series celebrating Cuban wildlife. This is an early colored coin. Wikipedia comments, "Hypoplectrus indigo, the indigo hamlet, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a sea bass from the subfamily Serraninae which is part of the family Serranidae, which also includes the groupers and anthias. It is found in the central western Atlantic Ocean. It occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade."
