Heritage sale 3082, lot 33607
Cuba H3082-33607r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33607 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,110. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba: Republic gold Proof Colorized "Pirates of the Caribbean - Piet Heyn" 50 Pesos 1995 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." This design was also used on a 5 oz silver NCLT. As one of the first "colorized" coins, it is rather crude. Piet Heyn was a captain in the Dutch navy who led several successful attacks on Spanish shipping. As a commissioned officer in time of war, his activities did not count as piracy, tho it is unlikely the Spanish saw it that way. He was killed in battle.

Recorded mintage: est. 1,000.

Specification: 13 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 495, Fr-90.
