This specimen was lot 1706 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $460. The catalog description[1] noted, "1899 20 colones. MS-63 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold, tiny reverse rim nick at 3:00. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." Costa Rica issued gold two, five, ten and twenty colones during 1897-1900; only the two colones survived until 1928. The twenty colones is scarce.
Recorded mintage: 5,000.
Specification: 15.56 g, .900 gold, .4502 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 15.57 grams, 26.90 mm diameter.
