After dropping the peso in 1897, Costa Rica issued gold two, five, ten and twenty colones during 1897-1900; only the two colones survived until 1928. The twenty colones is scarce but the other denominations are available for a price. This specimen was lot 23424 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $7,931.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 10 Colones 1899, MS64 NGC. The lowest mintage of this short-lived, three-year type. Fully brilliant mint luster with only minor marks. A conditionally rare issue and none have been certified finer by NGC."
