After dropping the peso in 1897, Costa Rica issued gold two, five, ten and twenty colones during 1897-1900; only the two colones survived until 1928. The twenty colones is scarce but the other denominations are available for a price.

Recorded mintage: 140,000.

Specification: 7.78 g, .900 gold, .225 troy oz AGW.
