This specimen was lot 23641 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20 Colones 1897, lustrous AU-UNC, quite nice for this series." Costa Rica issued gold two, five, ten and twenty colones during 1897-1900; only the two colones survived until 1928. The twenty colones is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 20,000.

Specification: 15.56 g, .900 gold, .4502 troy oz AGW.
