This specimen was lot 44381 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. 2 Escudos, 1855-JB. San Jose Mint. PCGS AU-55. Some minor wear and typical striking weakness is observed, but this wholesome, near-Mint example nevertheless retains enticing brilliance residing among the protected areas." This type was struck in Costa Rica 1850-63 and normally comes flat struck. Assayers JB (Juan Barth) and GW (Guillermo Witting) are both recorded for 1855. This date is listed as common.

Recorded mintage: 60,000 (assayers JB and GW).

Specification: 6.3 g, 0.875 fine gold, .177 troy oz AGW.
