This specimen was lot 30391 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1858-GW XF45 NGC, San Jose mint. Flatly struck as usual but with limited wear and some luster remaining. Very scarce in this appealing condition." This type was struck in San José intermittently during 1850-63 and is one of the last predecimal coins. This type is notoriously poorly struck.

Recorded mintage: 17,000.

Specification: 6.3 g, 0.875 fine gold.
