This specimen was lot 20451 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $3,407.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1862-GW, AU53 NGC, nicely toned with luster in the legends, an attractive example of this very scarce date. The Cecil Webster Collection of Costa Rica." This type was struck in San José intermittently during 1850-63 and is one of the last predecimal coins. This type is notoriously poorly struck.
