This specimen was lot 20445 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1854-GW, XF45 NGC, an attractive original example with pleasing old-time toning and luster in the legends. The GW assayer, Guillermo Witting, is by far the rarer of the two assayers active in 1854. Ex: Superior December 1997, Lot 0088. The Cecil Webster Collection of Costa Rica." This type was struck in San José intermittently during 1850-63 and is one of the last predecimal coins. This type is notoriously poorly struck.
