Cook Islands 1975 100 dollars
This specimen was lot 4818 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $471.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Cook Islands. 100 Dollars, 1975. Bicentennial - Return of Captain James Cook from Second Pacific Voyage. In original sealed cachet. Choice Brilliant Proof." The Cook Islands, like many small, impoverished nations, has contracted with private mints to produce and market a large variety of commemoratives sold in lands far from the issuing country. Captain Cook is relevant (the islands are named for him) but other issues honor Garfield the cat and Mickey Mouse.
Recorded mintage: 7,447 uncirculated plus 17,000 proofs.
Specification: 9.60 g, 0.900 fine gold, .277 troy oz AGW.
