This specimen was lot 5220 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $834. The catalog description[2] noted, "Seychelles. 1000 Rupees, 1976. Declaration of Independence. President Mancham. Reverse: Tortoise. NGC graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo." Seychelles, an island group in the Indian Ocean, is better known for its export of cinnamon, copra and vanilla. This type features a land tortoise, found only on Aldabra atoll. It is struck to the standard of a British double sovereign.
Recorded mintage: 5,000 uncirculated plus 1,000 proofs.
