Colombia 1878-P 1/4 decimo

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 44372

This specimen was lot 44372 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $55. The catalog description^[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/4 Decimo, 1878. Popayan Mint. EF-45 (PCGS). Slightly off center strike, light gray to brassy toning. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This is from a type struck 1868-81 with reduced silver fineness from the Popayán mint. The Bogotá mint also struck quarter décimos 1863-73 but switched to 2½ centavos for 1872-81.

Recorded mintage: 25,000, a rare date.

Specification: 0.85 g, 0.666 fine silver.
