Colombia 1863-P Peso
The specimen shown is a peso from the Popayán mint. It was lot 714 in Ponterio sale 137. Altho Bogotá issues are known for the years 1862-68, this is the only silver peso from Popayán. It is very rare and is valued in the catalog at fourteen times the price of the Bogotá issue. The striking of silver pesos ceased altogether in 1871. The second specimen was lot 32079 in Heritage sale 3135 (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $21,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia: Estados Unidos Peso 1863 AU53 NGC, Popayan mint. A one-year emission of great rarity as a product from Popayan, and thus highly desirable among Latin American specialists. We are delighted to offer the type for the first time, particularly this example, which possesses a crisp, well-centered strike and a fine cabinet patina. Ranking at the peak of the certified population report between both services, outranking five other straight-graded examples, including the El Dorado XF45 specimen, we expect collectors looking to complete the Republican Columbian Crown series might not find a better opportunity for decades.
