Colombia 1840-B RS 1/2 real

Sedwick sale 11, lot 1113

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen shown was lot 1113 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $151.80. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Bogotá, Colombia, 1/2 real, 1840RS. Lustrous AU, no toning, nice strike but with evidence of die-clashing in legend. Note that KM gives the fineness as 0.666 but Restrepo says 0.885, which seems more likely in this case since the coin looks like high-grade silver."

This half real is one of a series issued from Bogotá and Popayán 1838-48.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.26 g, 0.666 fine silver?, .027 troy oz ASW, the first specimen 1.4 grams.
