This specimen was lot 23659 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1823-FM Popayán, AU55 NGC, a nice example with strong details and considerable mint luster." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.

Catalog reference: KM 82.2.
