Sed36-1020r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1020 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold 1 escudo, 1823 JF, 1/S in denomination, very rare, ex-JEAS. Bold AU with muted luster, the obverse off-center and with rim-flaw on reverse but with clear over-punch in denomination that Restrepo calls 1/8. Pedigreed to the JEAS Collection." After independence, escudos were struck at the former colonial mints of Bogotá and Popayan. The Popayan issue is fairly common but Bogotá issues, struck 1823 and 1825, are fairly scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
