This specimen was lot 29543 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,468.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1792 NR-JJ AU58 NGC, Nuevo Reino mint. Borderline Uncirculated with slight friction evidence on the higher points, strong subjacent luster and attractive surface quality. Conditionally very scarce and quite desirable in this technical designation." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound, including a 1792/1. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.
