This specimen was lot 20701 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1791-SF Popayán, VF30 NGC, no adjustment marks and considerable luster in the legends. Scarce first date of the proper bust series. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound. Assayer SF is noted for 1776-92. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.
