Sedwick Treasure Auction 39, lot 57
Sedwick 39-0057r.jpg

This specimen was lot 57 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $5,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1731, assayer S to right, rare, NGC AU 58, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Santa Fe, Restrepo Plate (both stated on label). Bold strike on a broad flan with well-detailed full shield flanked by •F• and •S•, part of king's name in legend, full but doubled cross with bold REX.731 in legend (no first digit 1, which is typical for this assayer), faintly toned all over. Pedigreed to the Santa Fe Collection (Sedwick Auction 10, lot 69), also Plate Coin M80-8 on page 98 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012)." This type was struck for Philip IV 1701, 1707-43, 1747-48 (some of the early dates were struck in the name of Charles II, as if mint officials were trying to avoid taking sides in the War of the Spanish Succession). Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period. The period 1730-48 normally shows assayer "M"; perhaps this was struck from a leftover die from assayer "S".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.70 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9720 (assayer M), SANC-6; Restrepo-M80.8 (this coin); S-B25b; Cal-1947; KM-17.2; Fr-8a.
