SB824-44070r.jpg

This specimen was lot 44070 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $5,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1720. Bogota Mint. Philip V. PCGS AU-58. Transposed Lions and Castles. This gently circulated example displays an attractive pale golden coloration with a decent strike. Though slightly double struck, the date is bold and complete with partials of the legend on both sides including the kings ordinal. A rather irregular nature is observed for the flan, but that merely adds more character to this charming survivor. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Sedwick 10 (10/2011) Lot # 61. Ex: Joseph R. Lasser Collection. Plated in the Practical Book of Cobs (4th ed.)." This type was issued from Bogotá 1714-22. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. This type comes without a mintmark or assayer initials. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold.
