Colombia 1719 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 67 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $3,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1719 no assayer (Arce), very rare. Very broad flan with full shield and cross, bold full PHILIP to right of shield and clear bottom half of date outside of cross, minor weak spots, sediment in crevices, distinctive post-1715 type with dots in dimple-rings within which only the date 1719 has been confirmed, this being the finer of only two examples known to us (even if only VF)." This type was struck 1714-22 for Philip V and lacks a mintmark or assayers' initials. The SCWC states some are known with Charles's name (CAROLVS II) but this example is clearly PHILIP. We speculate that the treaty of Utrecht of 1714-15, in which all the powers recognized Philip V as king, allowed the mintmaster to declare for him openly.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.69 grams.
