Colombia 1714 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 78 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1714/3, no assayer (Arce), very rare, NGC MS 63 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest and only example in NGC census. Very bold and full 4/3 overdate (first example we have seen or heard of) outside of off-center cross, nearly full shield with upright lions in transposed quadrants, small edge-crack in flat area. From the 1715 Fleet." This type was issued from Bogotá 1701-13. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. This type comes without a mintmark or assayer initials. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."
