Colombia 1694-ARC E 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 31062 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1694-ARC E. Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-55. The portions of the strike that are on the compact flan are well applied and a handsome luster coats the surfaces. Very little evidence of technical wear is seen on the surfaces, ensuring this Cob will be a hot commodity. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This type was struck 1694-1701, with assayer ARC reported for 1694-1700. All dates are rare but nearly all the output of this mint in this reign was gold two escudos.
