Colombia 1693-ARC 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 69 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $5,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1693, assayer not visible (ARCE), PCGS AU55 (1715 Fleet), finest and only example in PCGS census. Full shield (transposed lions and castles) with clear ARC(E) in legend to left preceded by parts of king's name, choice full cross with distinctive style of fleurs, most of 3 of date in legend plus bottoms of 69, rich gold color, large edge-split. From the 1715 Fleet." The SCWC states this date should read 1693-NR A while Cayón describes it as 1693-NR R. Our search of the archives turns up no others of this date for comparison. The products of the Spanish mints are little better. Assayer ARC(E) is known for 1694-1700.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.68 grams.
