Colombia 1698-ARC 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 51230 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1698-ARC. Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Charles II. PCGS MS-62. Variety with inverted "69". An interesting variant in which the middle two digits of the date were inverted by the engraver, this Mint State specimen glistens with tremendous brilliance and offers great overall detail considering the cruder method of manufacture." This type was struck 1694-1701, with assayer ARC reported for 1694-1700. All dates are rare but nearly all the output of this mint in this reign was gold two escudos.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen 6.73 g.
Catalog reference: Fr-4; KM-14; Cal-902, Cayón-7814 (as assayer R).
