This specimen was lot 2284 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,448 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"500 Yuan 2009. Panda. Polierte Platte. FDC. (China, five hundred yuan of 2009, panda. Choice Proof.)"
The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. The gold panda is one of the most popular. Prior to 2001, the one ounce panda was denominated 100 yuan.
Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.
Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW, 32 mm diameter; this specimen 31.10 g.
