China 2009 50 yuan
This specimen was lot 70539 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 50 Yuan, 2009. Panda Series. NGC MS-69. A delightful entrant into this popular series, and one that resides at the cusp of perfection." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. The gold panda is one of the most popular. Prior to 2001, the one-tenth ounce panda was denominated ten yuan. In the panda series, the SCWC lists the 2000 yuan (KM 1873), 500 yuan (KM 1872) and the 200 yuan (KM 1870) for 2009 but nothing smaller; the KM 1978 listed by the auctioneers is not correct.
Recorded mintage: 100,000.
Specification: 3.110 g, 0.999 fine gold, 18 mm diameter, 0.100 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-B17; KM unlisted; PAN-501A, Numista#314770.
