China 2004 10000 yuan KM-1538
This specimen was lot 42071 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $84,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Exceptionally Impressive Gold Kilo Panda, CHINA. Gold 10000 Yuan (Kilo), 2004. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Serial number: 065. A very difficult and highly impressive type, this exceedingly enticing example stands as one of the larger gold denominations that one will encounter, pairing a popular series with tremendous technical flair and resounding beauty." This monstrous medallion, only theoretically a coin, was part of a series of gold pandas struck in sizes down to 1/20 ounce. The one ounce panda was raised from 100 yuan to 500 yuan in 2000. Another 10,000 yuan (KM 1550, also 1 kg gold) was struck for the Year of the Monkey. The current bullion value (August 2024) is about $81,000.
