China 1986 10 yuan KM-137
This specimen was lot 72079 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 10 Yuan, 1986. PCGS PROOF-69 DEEP CAMEO. Year of the Tiger. Hard mirror fields with frosted cameo devices." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. In addition to the well known series of panda coins in silver, gold and platinum, the regime has also marketed a series based on the Chinese zodiac. This one honors the Year of the Tiger. The Lunar series were struck to this standard 1983-91 along with a concurrent series of one ounce silver ten yuan struck 1988-2000.
