China 1986 100 yuan KM-151
This specimen was lot 142 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$833 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"100 Yuan 1986. Yak. Nur 3000 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. FDC. (China, gold one hundred yuan of 1986, wild yak. Only 3000 pieces struck, Choice Proof.)"
The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. Other endangered wildlife featured in this format include the golden monkey (KM 214, 1988), the tiger (KM 255, 1989) and the mountain sheep (KM 456, 1992).
