This specimen was lot 42069 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $28,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Impressive and Nearly-Flawless Gold Panda Issue of 12 Ounces, CHINA. Gold 1000 Yuan (12 Ounces), 1986. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Possessing richly mirrored fields and highly frosted devices, this RARE and enchanting specimen dazzles with a tremendous cameo nature and yields a charming olive-yellow hue throughout." The SCWC states that there are two varieties (KM 136.1 and 136.2) without explaining how they are different. The current bullion value (August 2024) is about $30,000. This denomination was struck in this format 1984-95. It was accompanied by a five ounce gold panda (KM 164) as well as the usual smaller sizes, down to 1/20 ounce.
