China 1986 5 yuan KM-140
This specimen was lot 1618 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA (PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC): AR 5 yuan, 1986, 13th Football World Cup - 2 players, mintage of only 1,000 pieces with matte finish, NGC graded Specimen 67 Matte, R." The five yuan NCLT's for 1986 included KM 131, 139, 140 (shown here), 141, 142, 143, 144, KM 148, KM 150 and KM 152. This and other early commemoratives often had low mintages as there was no domestic market for them and they sold poorly overseas.
Recorded mintage: 1,000 in satin finish plus 10,000 proofs.
Specification: 16.83 g, 0.800 fine silver, 0.432 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 140 (proof), KM-140a (satin finish), Y-197a.
