The first specimen was lot 1159 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. 30 Yuan, 1981. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo Secure Holder. Lunar Series, Year of the Cock." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. The 1993 SCWC valued this coin at $475, which number had been raised to $700 in the 2013 edition but the price realized here left both values in the dust.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 proofs.

Specification: 15 g, .850 fine silver, .410 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 40.
