China (1927) 20 cents Y-340
The first specimen was lot 52243 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 20 Cents, Year 16 (1927). NGC MS-62. A premium quality example of this SCARCE issue with surfaces that are virtually white and intensely lustrously and designs that border on fully struck." The second specimen was lot 52432 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 20 Cents, Year 16 (1927). PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Highly lust[rous] with soft tone that appears towards the rims on both sides. A RARE issue in this Gem quality with only 10 certified in this grade by PCGS and two finer." In the late 1920's, Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalists managed to defeat the Communists and extort professions of loyalty from most of the major warlords. During that brief calm, the mints issued several handsome commemoratives, including this one honoring Sun Yat-sen. He was unable, however, to stave off Japanese aggression and a new round of fighting began in 1931.
