Stephen Album sale 50, lot 772

This specimen was lot 772 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA: Republic, AR 10 cents, year 16 (1927), minted in Fukien, struck to commemorate the death of Sun Yat-sen, an attractive example, PCGS graded AU53." In the late 1920's, Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalists managed to defeat the Communists and extort professions of loyalty from most of the major warlords. During that brief calm, the mints issued new designs featuring the proposed national symbols of dragon and phoenix. He was unable, however, to stave off Japanese aggression and a new round of fighting began in 1931. Patterns exist of this design, struck in copper (KM Pn80) and gold (KM Pn81).

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common.

Specification: 2.7 g, silver, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Y-339, L&M-849, K-607, WS-1060.
