Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 52426

This specimen was lot 52426 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $8,700. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CHINA. 10 Cents, Year 15 (1926). NGC MS-65+. The popular "dragon and phoenix" type, this impressive Gem minor radiates with seemingly unending brilliance and an absolutely delightful matte nature. Exceeded in the NGC population report by just a single other specimen." In the late 1920's, Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalists managed to defeat the Communists and extort professions of loyalty from most of the major warlords. During that brief calm, the mints issued new designs featuring the proposed national symbols of dragon and phoenix. He was unable, however, to stave off Japanese aggression and a new round of fighting began in 1931.
