The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1976-80. It celebrates the third anniversary of the coup which overthrew the Allende government in favor of a military dicatorship. The escudo superseded the peso in 1960, with one escudo = 1000 pesos. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with 1 new peso = 100 escudos.
