Chile 1872-So 50 centavos
This specimen was lot 71445 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 50 Centavos, 1872-So. Santiago Mint. PCGS AU-58. Well-preserved and attractive, this silver minor displays crisp details and flashy luster on its deeply-toned surfaces. An appealing and problem-free example of the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This fifty centavo piece was minted in Santiago in 1867-72, superseding a type with higher relief (KM 134). This condor also appeared on half décimos, décimos and twenty centavos coins of the late 1860's. An 1872/0 overdate is mentioned in the SCWC but is awarded no premium.
Recorded mintage: 104,000, the most common date.
