Chile 1871 2 centavos
This copper-nickel two centavos was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1870-77. It was converted to copper in 1878 (KM 147a) and struck in that form until 1894. A slightly larger 2½ centavos was issued beginning in 1886. The type is not rare but most survivors are in poor condition. This specimen is a common date. The first specimen was lot 1370 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $302.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Republic. 1818-present. CU-NI 2 Centavos. Santiago mint. Dated 1871 So. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Choice uncirculated with deep lustrous silver patina. Highest graded specimen of any Chilean 2 cent piece, solo position. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, September 1980."
