This specimen was lot 30036 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rarely Seen in Such Condition Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838 So-JJ, AU58 NGC. Displaying a far above-average strike for the issue with a full hand and book on the obverse and only minor fading of the detail in the reverse shield. A scarce date with nearly full luster that is rarely encountered in Mint State." This "hand on book" type replaced the "crossed flag" type struck 1818-34 and was issued 1835-38. It was accompanied by similar one, two and four escudos types.

Recorded mintage: 33,000.
