This specimen was lot 20584 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1837-IJ, XF40 NGC, original patina, small die cud at 12 o'clock. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." This "hand on book" type replaced the "crossed flag" type struck 1818-34 and was issued 1835-38. It was accompanied by similar one, two and four escudos types.

Recorded mintage: 17,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
