Chile 1792 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 51376 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1792. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF-35. Type without mintmark. Variety with widely-spaced date. A lovely and wholesome example for this uncommon type. Richly toned with plenty of subdued luster surrounding its bold central devices. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. This one, featuring the lion and castle but without mintmark or value, was struck 1792-93 only and is quite scarce.
