SB124-51374 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51374 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1792-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC EF-45. Variety with proper bust of Charles IV (ordinal IIII). The second-finest example certified by NGC out of only six total, this piece represents an undoubtedly RARE opportunity for collectors of Spanish colonial minors. Beautifully struck on both sides and complemented by moderate charcoal toning throughout. A problem-free survivor which is sure to impress. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. This one, featuring a tiny bust of Charles IV, was struck 1792 only and is quite scarce. No other mint used this bust on the quarter real.

Recorded mintage: 255,000 (all types).

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13115, EMO-855.1 (Plate coin); KM-55; Cal-186 (Plate coin).
