Chile 1785-So DA 8 reales
This specimen was lot 976 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, bust 8 reales, Charles III, 1785/4 DA, very rare, NGC VF 20 (Colección Val y Mexía Label), ex-Amat. Broad flan with full rims, attractive light toning over smooth surfaces with even wear, among only 130,000 total minted for this year (most melted), desirable pedigree. Pedigreed to the Viceroy Amat Collection (Ponterio auction of March 1999, lot 77) and the Val y Mexía Collection." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint.
Recorded mintage: 130,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.
