SB1025-74019r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74019 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 2 Reales, 1785-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck in moderate numbers 1773-89 and this is an available date. In 1785, the regime ordered all the mints to secretly debase the silver coinage from 0.903 fine to 0.896 fine. Altho this change is noted in the Mexican and Peruvian sections of the SCWC, it is not in the Chilean section. The SCWC gives the 1785/4 overdate no premium.

Recorded mintage: 27,000, including a 1785/4 overdate.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11652, KM-30; Cal-766.
