Aureo sale 246, lot 677

This specimen was lot 677 in Aureo y Calicó sale 246 (Barcelona, September 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1786. Santiago. DA. 2 reales. Golpecitos. Leve grieta. Rara. MBC-. (Charles III, 1759-88, two reales of 1786, Santiago mint. Nicks and cuts, slightly rough, rare, about very fine.)"

Harris[2] tabulates the Charles III two reales of Santiago as the fourth most abundant mint, after Mexico City (common), Potosi and Lima (each about half as common as Mexico) but it is still scarce. In 1785, the regime ordered all the mints to secretly debase the silver coinage from 0.903 fine to 0.896 fine. Altho this change is noted in the Mexican and Peruvian sections of the SCWC, it is not in the Chilean section. This specimen has conspicuous die cracks on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 51,000.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver, 196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11660, KM 275, Cal. 1429.
