Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74006

This specimen was lot 74006 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Reales, 1783-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Damage, VG Details. A VERY RARE type, this specimen does exhibit some heavy circulation and the noted damage, but nevertheless remains a charming rendition of a difficult date. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1775-89 in small numbers although some of the dates of 1785-89 have respectable mintages, survival rates are low and few remain. Unlike the smaller denominations, overdates are few.
