This specimen was lot 41103 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Escudos, 1783-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Gouged, VF Details. A RARITY, with only a single other example appearing in our searches of public auction records over the past 25 years. Damaged over the portrait as noted, and exhibiting evidence of cleaning, but a desirable example of this elusive issue nonetheless. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1773-88 but is much rarer than the contemporary eight escudos. The government took over the mint in 1770 and enlarged it. In 1785, the alloy was debased from 0.901 to 0.875 fine gold.
