Cape Verde 1977 50 escudos rev DSLR.jpg

Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united. This type was struck in 1977 and 1980 and bears the portrait of Amilcar Cabral. Issues of this denomination after 1994 (KM 37, 43, 44) were struck in nickel-plated steel.

Wikipedia comments, "Amílcar Lopes da Costa Cabral (Portuguese: [ɐˈmilkaɾ ˈlɔpɨʃ kɐˈβɾal]; 12 September 1924 – 20 January 1973) was a Bissau-Guinean and Cape Verdean agricultural engineer, political organizer, and diplomat. He was one of Africa's foremost anti-colonial leaders."

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
